ANTHRAX, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY & HATEBREED AT THE RYMAN
Written by Montana Bullock
Celebrating 40 years of music, East coast thrash pioneers and pillar of the Big Four, Anthrax, have been hitting the road with co-headliners Black Label Sociey with support from Hatebreed. Wrapping up on August 28, there are still dates left to catch this killer lineup.
Opener Hatebreed, led by the incomparable Jamey Jasta and the first hardcore band to ever play the prestigious Ryman Auditorium, are one of the most fun bands to see in person and sound even better than their recordings. The aforementioned Jasta is great at whipping the crowd into a frenzy and is backed by a tight band of long term members including Chris Beattie (founding member) on bass, Matt Byrne on drums, Frank Novinec on rhythm guitar, and Wayne Lozinak (founding member) on lead. They arenāt playing much new material on this tour and are concentrating on making sure everyone gets to hear the hits, such as āDestroy Everythingā,ā Looking Down the Barrel of Todayā, and āI Will Be Heardā. They could be found signing autographs after their set showing a true connection to their fans.
Next up, the legendary Zakk Wylde and his Doom Crew in Black Label Society. Zakk is giving more time to shine to his other half of the guitar pair in Dario Lorina who often doubles up Zakkās leads or takes over when he is playing piano. Along with John DeServio on bass and Jeff Fabb, BLS tear through 90 minutes of guitar shredding mixed with a handful of slower ballads, such as the Dimebag Darrell dedicated āIn This Riverā. The crowd had a great time playing with beach balls provided by the Doom Crew and got to enjoy a fantastic light show while a giant Ozzy awaited them outside. In related news, Zakk will be filling for Dimebag along with Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante for Vinnie Paul on an upcoming Pantera tribute tour with Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown.
Topping off the night is the OG thrash titans, Anthrax. Except for a few more gray hairs, these guys sound as fresh and energetic as their early 80s and 90s origins. Opening with their classic song āI am the Lawā, singer Joey Belladonna hits operatic highs as well as Rob Halford and really keeps up great energy throughout the show. Scott Ian earns the respect of fans and lays down a solid rhythm with bassist Frank Bello and drummer Charlie Benante. Taking over after Rob Caggiano departed for Volbeat, Jon Donais, formerly of Shadows Fall, is a killer addition to the veteran thrash lineup and really nails all the classic solos.
Donāt miss this one, folks. There are only a few dates left.
