Bree Lefler- “That’s Sobriety”

On August 22nd, Bree Lefler released her second EP entitled, “That’s Sobriety.”
It features six tracks in total: five songs plus an acoustic demo of her song, “That’s Sobriety.” The opening track, “Atmosphere,” coaxes you into the EP with a simple, sweet vocal that soothes the ear for about 50 seconds before the rhythm sections joins in, turning a gentle vocal into a powerhouse of a message. The track first introduces the listener to the recurring theme of drugs in the artist’s life with the line, “I wanna feel more than the drugs.” The percussion choices for her second song, “Hypochondriac,” left me with what I can only describe as a beautiful Alanis Morissette vibe.
By the third song, “Tin Can Telephone,” Bree delivers powerful belts, seamlessly paired with artistic lyricism: “tell me how’s a father gonna let his daughter run out of breath? Is there anyone on the other end of this tin can telephone?” Following, is her title track displaying Bree’s 90’s-esque country pop influence, with heavy relatable lyrics: mirroring the similarities between sobriety from substances and sobriety from a toxic relationship. Finally, her song “Gasoline” concludes the EP with the lyrics surrounding her sobriety theme: “If I say goodbye, will I get clean?”
This EP perfectly demonstrates Bree’s transition from an acoustic Country background to a more punk rock edginess, as well as her transition from a life of addiction to a life of confidence and free will.
