The American Bollywood Tour brought together two of the most exciting indie bands in the world, Young the Giant and Milky Chance, for a night of music and culture at Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville.
Young the Giant, best known for their multi-platinum hits “My Body” and “Cough Syrup,” were back after four years with their latest release, “American Bollywood.” The album, an ambitious and sprawling exploration of identity and the immigrant experience, has critics raving. The band, fronted by the dynamic Sameer Gadhia, offered a vibrant mix of intimate lyrics and expansive sonic landscapes. All the while, the current single, “The Walk Home,” was rapidly gaining momentum at AAA and Alternative Radio.
Beside them on this epic tour, Milky Chance, an old favorite of mine. I’ve been a fan of their uniquely delicious tunes for years, but this was the first time seeing them live. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but they did not disappoint.
The venue was alive, a delightful summer evening with the scent of green mingling with the excitement. I found my spot on the lawn, barefoot and buzzing from a cocktail or two, enveloped in the hum of conversation and laughter. The stage lights flickered to life, casting a glow over the milling crowd.
As Milky Chance took the stage, the atmosphere turned electric. Their stage lighting was moody and dark, making photography a bit tricky, but adding to their enigmatic presence. The band, celebrated for their indie hits like “Flashed Junk Mind” and “Cocoon,” filled the air with their intoxicating sound, the audience swaying in response.
Young the Giant then claimed the spotlight. I hadn’t been familiar with their music before, but they sure knew how to make an impression. The stage lighting was brighter, casting the band in a fantastic light, a dream for any music photographer. The crowd roared as Gadhia belted out their new crowd favorite, “Wake Up,” and their album’s title track, “American Bollywood.”
Despite my unfamiliarity with their music, Young the Giant delivered a performance that left an indelible mark. Their stage presence was electrifying, their sound rich and captivating. They turned a first-time listener into a fan, no easy feat.
As the night drew to a close, I couldn’t help but wish for more. The experience was as much about the atmosphere as it was the music, an amalgamation of different sounds, tastes, and emotions. The American Bollywood Tour is a music event you’d be hard-pressed to forget, a testament to the artistry of Young the Giant and Milky Chance.
