LIVE MUSIC REVIEW

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Sheyda opened at Hutton Hotel’s Analog Friday night for what she called her “first real show,” and though she admitted she had jitters, her strong vocal performance didn’t give it away. She opened with her first single release “The Dragon,” a song dealing with addiction, helping someone who’s “always talking about someday.”

She followed with “Wish I Could Want You,” a clever jab at those people whose appeal diminishes once you get to know they’re “ugly on the inside.” Through the set, she balanced mood and tempo, slowing things down for “Won’t See Me Crying,” a song she co-wrote in 2018 after learning of the death of Aretha Franklin at a point when she was already feeling a little heartbroken.

Calling it her “first and last sad song” for the night, she next sang “GtG (Get the Gun)” a high-energy celebration of outings with girlfriends—drawing cheers from audience. She and Leland Grant, her guitarist on backup vocals, had to catch their breath after the “pedal to the metal” performance.

She followed with a preview of “Woah,” to be released April 22 that showcased her strong and sultry vocals. While Leland said they intended to play until 3:45 am, Sheyda wrapped up with her latest release, “Big Heartbreak.” She said that everyone writes about heartbreak, but she figures “if you’re doing to do it, do it big.” Taking the same approach to her music career should bode well for the California native as she carves out her place in Nashville.
