Puscifer at The Pinnacle in Nashville

It feels appropriate that Puscifer titled its fifth studio album “Normal Isn’t,” because there is nothing normal when it comes to seeing a Puscifer concert – and that’s exactly what makes it unique.

The show even started in bizarrely entertaining fashion, with comedian Dave Hill performing a 30-minute set. The comedian rode a bicycle onto the stage and immediately showed off his microphone swinging skills, before busting out some nunchucks – even wacking himself in the face. He followed that with some rather funny jokes, as he shredded his guitar and even brought out an accompanying band. It was strange and weird, but all in the best way, as the crowd chanted “Dave! Dave! Dave!” when he exited the stage.

From the very start, Puscifer let the audience know this performance would be part theater, part rock show, and at times, just strange and campy. However, that silliness is exactly what made the set engaging, as the audience was left wondering where the show was headed next.

Singers Maynard James Keenan and Carina Round played their parts to perfection, telling a story not only with their vocals but also with their actions on stage. Throughout the performance, the two acted like a fight was about to ensue, circling each other, before later blasting each other with NERF-like guns. It made for a bizarre, fun story that helped bring the lyrics to life.

While Keenan and Round were in the spotlight, the instrumentals helped set the mood of the performance. In fact, the instrumentals were a big part of why the set felt cinematic. The tones went from slow, smoky noir in some parts to industrial in others, to just warm and silly. The impressive part was that none of it felt messy at all.

While the majority of the tracks featured were from the newest album, fans did get some earlier songs mixed into the set. But even some of those older tunes included new elements, which helped make the songs feel fresh and fit the overall tone of the performance.

As the show concluded, many in the crowd could be heard praising it, while others highlighted their favorite moments. Through its smart performance, which mixed art, irony, and strong musicianship, Puscifer proved why this project works and is easily a show fans can’t miss.
